SAARC – South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation is an economic and political organisation formed by eight countries that were primarily located in South Asia with its Headquarters at Kathmandu. The SAARC aims to promote economic welfare and to accelerate socio-cultural development in the region.The idea of regional political and economical cooperation in South Asia was first raised on 2nd May 1980 by the President Bangladesh. Hence, the first Summit was held at Dhaka Bangladesh on 8th December 1985, establishing the regional association against problems like terrorism, drug trafficking etc.
A commemorative stamp was issued on this occasion with the denomination of Rs.5. This bilingual stamp features a lotus in the centre surrounded by the flags of respective countries.
